What’s in a Word?

by Aggie Perilli

Exactly one month ago, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that gave gay couples the right to marry. In an article entitled, You’re Making Me the Bride? A Hiccup for Gay Unions, the New York Times reported that a gay couple from the East Village had tried to apply for a marriage license early. The marriage application in the city clerk’s office left the men with just two options: bride or groom. When this was brought to the attention of city officials, they quickly scrambled to update their forms.

I was inspired by the power of a single word to literally engage and transform the lives of hundreds of couples and families in New York alone.

For others similarly enthusiastic about marriage, W.H. Murray may have said it best: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Whatever you can do or dream that you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

Regardless of the words chosen to celebrate all New York marriage applicants, happy one-month anniversary to the newly betrothed!

How do you refer to your partner?
